Most visitors see the Erg Chebbi dunes only from a camel's back at sunset, but the desert around Merzouga has much more to discover. On this private 4x4 tour, a local driver who grew up in the region takes you all the way around the dunes. You visit a nomad family in their tent and share tea, learn how they live with their goats and camels, and drive across the black stony plains of the hamada. In Khamlia, a village founded by descendants of people from sub-Saharan Africa, you listen to Gnawa music, played with iron castanets and drums, in a family house. You stop at old mines where fossils of trilobites and ammonites lie in the rock, and at the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji, where flamingos sometimes stop after rain. Lunch is a Berber pizza, madfouna, baked in the sand. In the late afternoon you climb a high dune to watch the sunset over the sea of sand.

    Day 1: 4x4 tour around Erg Chebbi
