This is the experience most people imagine when they think of the Sahara. In the late afternoon your cameleer meets you at your hotel or auberge in Merzouga and you ride for about 1.5 hours into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes, stopping on a crest to watch the sunset. At the camp, nestled between high dunes, you have mint tea, a tagine dinner and an evening of Berber drums around the fire. With no city lights, the stars are extraordinary. Before dawn you climb a dune to watch the sunrise, then ride back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. Your luggage can stay safely at the hotel.
