For travellers who want to step out of time, this 4-day trek makes a full loop around the Erg Chebbi. With your Berber guide, a cook and a small caravan, you walk and ride through landscapes that change every day: high orange dunes, black stony plains, dry riverbeds with acacias and small palm oases. Each night is spent in a different remote camp, with dinner cooked on the fire and nothing but stars above. You share tea with nomad families, learn how to read tracks in the sand and how water is found in the desert. On the fourth day you return to Merzouga, slower, quieter and with sand in your shoes.

    Day 1: Into the dunes

    Meet at your hotel in the afternoon. Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi, sunset and the first night in a desert camp.

  2. 2

    Day 2: South to the oases

    Walk and ride south through the dunes to a small oasis. Lunch in the shade, meet a nomad family and camp near the oasis.

  3. 3

    Day 3: Across the black desert

    Cross stony plains and dry riverbeds along the eastern side of the dunes. Lessons on tracks and desert life. Night in a remote camp.

  4. 4

    Day 4: Back to Merzouga

    Climb the high dunes for a last sunrise, then trek back to Merzouga.
