The Ouzoud Waterfalls are the highest in Morocco: the river drops about 110 metres in several cascades into a green gorge in the Middle Atlas, about two and a half hours from Marrakech. This day trip takes you there in comfort and leaves plenty of time to enjoy the falls. With a local guide, you walk down a shaded path lined with olive trees and small cafés to the bottom of the gorge, where rainbows often form in the spray. Wild Barbary macaques live in the trees around the falls and are easy to spot. At the bottom, local boatmen can take you on a short ride on a colourful raft close to the falling water. You have lunch at a terrace restaurant with a view of the cascades, then time to walk along the river or relax before the drive back. On the way you cross olive groves and the red earth villages of the Atlas foothills. A refreshing escape from the city, especially lovely from spring to autumn.

    Day 1: Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls and back

    Pick-up from your hotel or riad in the morning and drive north-east through olive groves and Atlas villages to Ouzoud, about two and a half hours away. Meet your local guide and walk down to the foot of the falls, spotting Barbary macaques on the way. Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive?

About two and a half to three hours each way, with a stop on the way. You get around four hours at the falls.

Is the walk difficult?

The path down to the falls is about 20 to 30 minutes on steps and slopes, and the walk back up takes a little longer. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Is the boat ride included?

No, the short boat ride is optional and paid directly to the local boatmen. Your guide can arrange it for you.

Are the monkeys safe?

The Barbary macaques are wild but used to visitors. Watch them from a short distance and don't feed them, as human food makes them ill.
