Imlil is the mountain village at the gateway of Toubkal National Park, under Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 metres. On this day hike you leave Marrakech in the morning and drive about 90 minutes into the High Atlas, with views of the snow-capped summits for much of the year. In Imlil you meet your local mountain guide, who leads a walk of about four to five hours along mule tracks and village paths. You pass terraced fields, apple and walnut orchards and Berber villages built from stone and earth, such as Aroumd, perched on a rocky spur. Lunch is served in a family house, with a homemade tagine and a view over the valley. The hike is moderate, with climbs and descents but no technical sections, and your guide adapts the route to the group and the weather. It is the best way to see the real life of the High Atlas without a multi-day trek, and the mountain air is a welcome change after the city.

    Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil and the Toubkal valleys

    Morning pick-up in Marrakech and drive through Asni to Imlil, the village at the entrance of Toubkal National Park. Meet your mountain guide and set off on foot along mule tracks through orchards and terraced fields to the village of Aroumd and the viewpoints over the valley. Enjoy a homemade lunch in a Berber family house, then walk back down by another path. Return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?

You should be comfortable walking for four to five hours with some uphill sections. The paths are not technical, and the guide sets the pace and can shorten the route.

Is lunch included?

A home-cooked lunch in a Berber family house is part of the day. Drinks bought along the way are not included.

What should I bring?

Walking shoes with a good grip, a warm layer (it is cooler in the mountains), a hat, sunscreen and a bottle of water. In winter, bring a waterproof jacket and gloves.

Do we climb Toubkal?

No. This is a day hike in the valleys at the foot of Toubkal. Climbing the summit takes at least two days and needs a separate trek.
