Within an hour of Fes lie three of Morocco's most important historic sites, and this day trip brings them together. Volubilis was a prosperous Roman city on the edge of the empire; today its triumphal arch, basilica columns and floor mosaics of gods and animals stand in open fields of olive trees, and it is listed by UNESCO. A local guide brings the houses and streets back to life. Just above, the white town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun spills over two hills: it grew around the tomb of Idriss I, founder of the first Moroccan dynasty, and is a place of pilgrimage. From a viewpoint you see the whole town and the valley. In the afternoon you reach Meknes, the capital built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, with the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the lively Place el-Hedim, the vast royal granaries and stables and the quiet medina. A day of history and landscapes, back in Fes for dinner.

    Day 1: Fes to Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes

    Morning pick-up in Fes and drive to Volubilis, about 80 minutes. Visit the Roman ruins with a local guide, then drive up to the viewpoint over Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Continue to Meknes for lunch and an afternoon among its monuments: Bab Mansour, Place el-Hedim, the medina and the royal granaries. Return to Fes in the early evening.
