Fes el-Bali is a living medieval city of 9,000 lanes, and the best way to understand it is with a local who grew up there. Your licensed guide meets you at your riad and leads you through the Blue Gate of Bab Boujloud into the souks, past the Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often called the oldest university in the world, and into the carved cedar and zellij courtyards of the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas. You see the dyers' souk, the coppersmiths' square and the famous Chouara tanneries from a terrace. In the afternoon a driver takes you to the golden gates of the Royal Palace, the old Jewish quarter and the hill of the Merinid tombs for a view over the whole medina.
