Fes is the closest imperial city to the big dunes of Merzouga, which makes this the easiest Sahara escape in northern Morocco. Day one climbs into the Middle Atlas through Ifrane, the alpine-style town known as the Switzerland of Morocco, and the cedar forest of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. The road then crosses the high plains to Midelt and follows the Ziz gorges and its long palm grove to Erfoud and Merzouga. A camel takes you into the dunes for sunset and a night in a desert camp. The next morning you watch the sunrise and drive back to Fes by the same scenic road.
