Most international flights land in Casablanca, which makes it the natural start of a first trip to Morocco. This eight-day private tour takes you across the whole country without rushing. You begin with the Hassan II Mosque and the capital Rabat, then head into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen, the blue city, for a night among its lanes. On the way to Fes you visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis, and in Fes a licensed guide shows you the medieval medina, its tanneries and madrasas. Next you cross the Middle Atlas, its cedar forests and macaques, to Merzouga, where a camel takes you into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night in a desert camp. The road west follows the Todra and Dades gorges and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, before crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech. Your last day is a guided tour of Marrakech: Bahia Palace, the souks and Jemaa el Fna. The tour ends at your riad or at Marrakech airport.

    Day 1: Casablanca and Rabat

    Pick-up at Casablanca airport or your hotel. Visit the Hassan II Mosque, then drive to Rabat to see the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Dinner and night in Rabat.

    Day 2: Rabat to Chefchaouen

    Drive north into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen. Afternoon walk in the blue medina with a local guide and sunset at the Spanish Mosque. Dinner and night in a riad.

    Day 3: Chefchaouen to Fes via Volubilis

    Drive south to the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss. Continue to Fes. Dinner and night in a riad in the medina.

    Day 4: Guided tour of Fes

    Full day with a licensed guide in Fes el Bali: madrasas, the Chouara tanneries, the Nejjarine fountain, craftsmen's souks and the Royal Palace gates. Free evening.

    Day 5: Fes to Merzouga and the Sahara

    Cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and the cedar forest of Azrou, then Midelt and the Ziz valley. Arrival in Merzouga in the late afternoon and camel ride into the dunes for sunset. Dinner and night in a desert camp.

    Day 6: Merzouga to the Dades Gorge via Todra

    Sunrise over the dunes and camel ride back. Drive through Rissani and Tinghir to the Todra Gorge for a walk, then to the Dades Gorge. Dinner and night in a guesthouse.

    Day 7: Dades to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou

    Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Valley of Roses and Ouarzazate. Visit Ait Ben Haddou, then cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech. Dinner and night in a riad.

    Day 8: Guided tour of Marrakech and end

    Half-day guided tour of Marrakech: Koutoubia, Bahia Palace, the souks and Jemaa el Fna. Free afternoon, then drop-off at your riad or Marrakech airport.
