Chefchaouen Day Trip from Tangier: The Blue City of the Rif Mountains

Chefchaouen is one of the most photographed places in Morocco: a small town in the Rif mountains whose houses, stairs and doors are painted in every shade of blue. From Tangier it makes a beautiful day trip through green hills and cork-oak forests. On arrival a local guide shows you the medina: the Outa el Hammam square with its red-walled kasbah, the Grand Mosque with its octagonal minaret, the washhouses fed by the Ras el Maa spring, and quiet lanes where you will find the best photo spots without the crowds. You have free time for lunch on a terrace, for shopping for woollen blankets and goat cheese, a local speciality, and for the short walk up to the Spanish Mosque, which gives the classic view over the whole blue town. In the late afternoon you drive back to Tangier, with a stop for a view over the mountains on the way.
