This week-long desert tour from Marrakech is for travellers who want to really feel the south of Morocco. After Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades valley, you spend two nights in Merzouga: one in a hotel at the foot of the dunes and one in a desert camp, with a full day to explore by 4x4, visit Khamlia and its Gnawa musicians and see the nomad families of the Erg Chebbi. Then the little-used road through Alnif and Tazzarine takes you to Zagora and the Draa valley, the longest palm grove in Morocco. You end with Ouarzazate and the crossing of the Atlas back to Marrakech. Two deserts, five valleys, one unhurried week.

    Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and Telouet to Ait Ben Haddou. Sunset over the ksar. Night at Ait Ben Haddou.

    Day 2: Ait Ben Haddou to the Dades valley

    Ouarzazate, Skoura and the Valley of Roses to the Dades gorge. Night in the Dades valley.

    Day 3: Todra Gorge to Merzouga

    Walk in the Todra Gorge, then the Tafilalet oases to Merzouga. Sunset on the dunes. Night in a hotel at the foot of Erg Chebbi.

    Day 4: A day in the Sahara

    4x4 tour around Erg Chebbi: Khamlia, a nomad family, the old mines and the lake. Camel trek at sunset and night in a desert camp.

    Sunrise, then the quiet road through Alnif, Tazzarine and the black desert to Zagora. Night in Zagora.

    Through the palm groves and kasbahs of the Draa valley and Agdz to Ouarzazate. Visit of the Taourirt kasbah. Night in Ouarzazate.

    Day 7: Ouarzazate to Marrakech

    Over the High Atlas with a stop at an argan cooperative, back to Marrakech.
