Morocco has four imperial cities, each a former royal capital, and this six-day tour connects them in a comfortable loop from Marrakech. You begin on the Atlantic in Casablanca, with a visit of the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world, built partly over the ocean. In Rabat, the elegant capital, you walk through the white and blue lanes of the Kasbah of the Udayas, see the Hassan Tower and the royal mausoleum, and explore the Roman and medieval ruins of the Chellah. Then come Meknes, the city of Sultan Moulay Ismail with its monumental Bab Mansour gate, and the Roman city of Volubilis, whose mosaics are still in place. Two nights in Fes give you time to explore Fes el-Bali, the largest medieval medina in the world, its tanneries, madrasas and craftsmen, with a local guide. The return to Marrakech crosses the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where Barbary macaques live, and the town of Ifrane. History, architecture and daily life, at an easy pace.
