Just 45 minutes from Chefchaouen, the Akchour valley is the most beautiful hiking spot in the Rif mountains. The Farda river has carved deep gorges through the limestone, with turquoise pools, small waterfalls and green slopes of oak and pine. On this guided day hike you follow the river from the dam at Akchour, crossing small bridges and passing cafés built on the rocks, to the first waterfall, an easy walk of about an hour. Those who want more continue up to the great waterfall, or take the other trail to God's Bridge, a natural rock arch about 25 metres above the river, with views down into the gorge. Your guide knows the paths well and adapts the hike to your group. You stop for lunch at a riverside restaurant, with tajine cooked over wood, and if the weather is warm you can swim in the cool pools. Then you return to Chefchaouen in the late afternoon.

    Day 1: Akchour hike

    Pick-up at your riad at 9 am and 45-minute drive to Akchour. Hike along the river to the first waterfall, then on to the great waterfall or God's Bridge depending on your level. Lunch by the river and time to swim. Return to Chefchaouen around 5 pm.

How difficult is the hike?

Easy to moderate. The first waterfall is about 1 hour of walking; God's Bridge and the great waterfall add 2 to 3 hours with some climbs.
